Picking up after your dog is one of the easiest ways we can all help protect our community and local environment. It may feel like a small task, but leaving pet waste behind can have big impacts on water quality, public health, and the natural spaces we enjoy.

Pet waste contains harmful bacteria and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. When rain or snowmelt runs across yards, sidewalks, parks, and trails, it can carry this waste into nearby lakes, streams, and wetlands. Once in the water, bacteria from pet waste can cause illness and make these areas unsafe for swimming or other recreation. Excess nutrients can also fuel unwanted aquatic plant growth and harmful algal blooms, which threaten fish, wildlife, and the overall health of our waterways.

Fortunately, the solution is simple: always bring a plastic bag or pooper scooper when walking your dog. Scoop the waste, tie the bag, and place it in a trash can. If you prefer, you can flush the waste down the toilet—just make sure the bag goes in the trash and not the toilet.

Taking a moment to clean up after your dog helps keep our waterways cleaner, our community healthier, and our shared spaces enjoyable for everyone.
